Where science and spirituality meet to propel human growth
Where science and spirituality meet to propel human growth
I was raised a Christian but fell out of it in early high school. With everything in education and society, it is easy to be dissuaded from spirituality in our society. There are typically not a lot of influences for a young person that contain realistic, sound arguments for spirituality. It wasn’t until my mid to late 20s that I found the sources of information that made articulate arguments synthesizing religion and science. I had to go out of my way to find that information.
Once I found New Thought and understood the logic, sense, and power behind Christ’s teachings, I went through some intense years of study and practice; I wanted to be a good Christian. Many new interpretations of Christianity were swirling in my brain. One of the topics on my mind was money. During an early part of my journey, Joseph Murphy, Emmet Fox, and Ernest Holmes convinced me that God created absolute abundance, and we can all use it. We just have to learn how to accept it. Even though I find a lot of truth in the literature, I always check New Thought literature against the Bible. Jesus states that he came so that we could live abundantly (John 10:10) and that God wants to give us all that is his; we only need to accept it (Luke 15:31). There are many examples of us receiving God’s abundance. But there was one section of scripture I was getting hung up on. It was about money. Jesus stated, “Again, I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” I thought Jesus was talking in hyperbole or an exaggeration and that it was almost impossible for a rich person to get into the kingdom of even. I thought he wanted us to imagine sticking a full-grown camel through a sewing needle! So, I was telling myself making money should not be a priority.
Everything in our external lives comes from our inner thoughts (Mark 7:15), and this inner conflict in my mind was stopping money from coming to me. However, one wonderful day, I found that this was not what Jesus meant at all! A passage from Emmett Fox’s Around the Year blew my mind and totally cleared this problem up for me!
On the subject, he writes, “In those days, every important city was surrounded by a wall for defense. There would be a large gate in the wall and this would be closed at sunset and placed under an armed guard. There was usually, however, a low wicket gate known as the needle’s eye, set in the big door. When a laden camel arrived after sunset, the only way it could get it was to be unloaded of all merchandise, whereupon it would squirm on its knees through the needle’s eye”.
Now, there are a few ways we can take this. One is that we need to remember to humble ourselves before God while we become rich. This can also be a statement that reminds us not to get too attached to our material possessions. One thing it is not saying is that we have to fit a 1,000-pound camel through a sewing needle!
I found it funny when Steve Harvey had the same dilemma, which leads me to believe Steve and I are not the only ones who struggled with this. He discussed it in one of his motivational speeches. I have the timestamp at the point he discusses this.
I immediately started making more money after getting past this conflict in my mind. Money is a gift from God, and it allows us to help others and spread joy. The the Bible is in support of you having a lot of money. Open yourself to abundance, and be thankful to the Infinite Power in heaven, and you can have all that you can ever ask for. God has absolute abundance. There is nothing he won’t give you if you learn how to ask and accept it. This idea is perfectly portrayed in the story of the prodigal son, which we will cover in more depth later. For now, the ending will do:
‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours (Luke 15:31).
